Bequests
The Cat Protection Society of NSW Inc is dependent on donations, sponsorship and bequests. Less than two per cent of our operating income comes from a State Government grant – the rest of the money comes from our supporters.
None of us likes to think about dying, but having a Will is an important way of ensuring your estate is distributed in accordance with your wishes. You should also think about who will care for your cats if they survive you, or if you are faced with an emergency that leaves you unable to care for them. It is best to discuss this with family or friends so that they are aware of your preferences, taking into account what is in the best interests of your cats. You can even set up a trust to provide for the ongoing care of your cats.
Cat Protection can help your cat find another home. It is our goal to create a legacy home for cats unable to be rehomed with friends or family. We don’t have the funds for this facility now, but we always make every effort to find loving new homes for cats whose owners have passed away.
We strongly recommend that you see your solicitor, the Public Trustee or other professional to discuss and draft your Will. If your Will is not correctly worded there is no guarantee your wishes will be followed. You also need to make sure family or trusted friends know where your Will is kept. The Public Trustee or your solicitor can keep your Will in safe custody. If you die without leaving a valid Will, the law will determine how your assets will be distributed, and this may be contrary to what you would have wished.
The Cat Protection Society of NSW Inc is an independent charity, operating since 1958. Thanks to the generosity of our friends, members and supporters, we have directly helped tens of thousands of cats through our shelter and desexing programs, and indirectly helped many more through our education and information services. It was bequest income which enabled us to purchase 103 Enmore Road which houses our shelter, and it is bequest income that helps us to meet more than a third of our annual operating expenses.
If you wish to leave a bequest to Cat Protection, to reassure yourself that we continue to reflect your values, you can become a member. Membership will keep you up to date with our activities (via our quarterly magazine) and give you the right to participate in annual general meetings and Board elections. Of course, there is no obligation to become a member and you are always welcome to visit or phone us if you have any questions.
If you would like to remember the cats in your Will, provide your solicitor with the following wording:
I, (insert full name and address) give and bequeath to the Cat Protection Society of NSW Inc, the registered office of which is 103 Enmore Road, Newtown, NSW 2042, (the sum of [$xx])
OR (a complete description of the asset) for the general purposes of the charity’s work. I declare that the receipt of the treasurer or other proper officer shall be sufficient discharge for the Executor and/or Trustee.
(where a specific sum of money or specific asset is to be bequeathed)
– or:
I, (insert full name and address) give and bequeath all the rest and residue of my estate of whatsoever kind and wheresoever situated to the Cat Protection Society of NSW Inc, the registered office of which is 103 Enmore Road, Newtown, NSW 2042, for the general purposes of the charity’s work. I declare that the receipt of the treasurer or other proper officer shall be sufficient discharge for the Executor and/or Trustee.
(where the bequest relates to the residue of an estate).
If you don’t have your own solicitor, you can search for one in your area using the website of the Law Society of NSW. The Law Society also has information about Wills and Estates –

Op Shop
To help raise funds for our work, the Cat Protection Society has an Opportunity Shop next door to our cattery and office. The Op Shop is located at

105 Enmore Road,
Newtown,
just opposite the Enmore Theatre.
The Op Shop relies entirely on volunteer staff and donated goods such as second-hand clothes and bric-a-brac.
If you want to donate goods, please phone the Op Shop on 9516 2072.
(Please note: Our Op Shop is unable to accept large items, such as furniture, or electrical goods).
Of course, you can also help by shopping at the Op Shop! You never know what bargains you might find...
Cattery
Looking after all our cats and kittens is a huge daily task.
Volunteers help with cleaning and importantly, socialising the cats and kittens.
Time spent playing, patting and grooming the cats is enjoyable for volunteers and cats alike!
It helps the cats learn to interact positively with people, and a happy cat is more likely to find a loving new home.
The CPS sincerely thanks every one who has applied to volunteer, or who is interested in applying for our cattery volunteer program. Due to wonderful support, we now have a substantial waiting list for volunteering in our cattery.
Please check our website for further updates. Thank you for your support and patience.
Please note: This does not affect foster care applications - foster carers are still very much needed.
Foster Care
Every year the warmer months bring 'kitten season' and every year we have more kittens brought to us than we can look after at any one time.
Foster carers look after litters of kittens, or mothers and kittens, until they are old enough to be desexed and rehomed. As a foster carer, you need to have a quiet secure room at home where you can keep the kittens, and you need to be willing to invest your time and emotional commitment to raising kittens for rehoming.
We provide food, litter, bedding etc and you provide the care and love.
To find out about becoming a foster carer, please download an application form.
Animals (Regulation of Sale) Bill 2008. Member for Sydney, Clover Moore,
has amended this Bill so that it is simplified and focuses on banning
the sale of cats and dogs in pet shops and markets, and allowing only
recognised breeders, animal shelters and rescuers, council pounds and
vets re-homing abandoned animals to advertise the sale of dogs and cats.
The Cat Protection Society of NSW supports the Bill. We know first hand
the misery created by impulse buying of kittens and tragedy of feline
overpopulation that comes from the sale of undesexed kittens. If you
support the Bill, we urge you to contact your local member of State
Parliament and tell them you support the Bill.

Help to stop the cycle of feline overpopulation
How many times have you seen flyers or newspaper ads promoting ‘free’ kittens? Sadly, too many people don’t desex their cats and then hope that by giving away the resulting offspring the problem is solved. WRONG!
Every year in New South Wales alone there are thousands and thousands more kittens than there are good homes for them. The abandonment and destruction of innocent lives must end and the only realistic long-term solution is the desexing of all pet cats prior to sexual maturity.
You can help solve feline overpopulation.
When you see an ad or hear about someone offering ‘free to good to home’ kittens, phone them and tell them about the discount desexing programs offered by animal welfare groups such as the Cat Protection Society and National Desexing Network
www.ndn.org.au. Tell them to call us or a local organisation for assistance or referral with desexing their cat. Encourage them to surrender the kittens to a shelter like CPS where they will be desexed before being rehomed. Remind them that it is illegal in NSW to sell or give away kittens that are not microchipped. Let them know that tens of thousands of cats and kittens are euthanased every year because there are just too many kittens and not enough homes. Or you can drop
this notice into their letterbox to remind them of their legal responsibilities.
Help them to be part of the solution, not the problem.
